As of the 2025-26 school year, Shanna Rufener has stepped into the role as the new superintendent of Durand schools.
Working to earn the correct qualifications, Rufener earned thirty additional credits to secure her superintendent licensure and ensure her position.
As expected, this new change in position has brought forth some level of adjustment.
“It has been a good experience adjusting,” Rufener said. “It’s been very helpful that I know so many of the students, staff, and families because it’s a big part of success as superintendent.”
Rufener also mentioned she is now adjusting to the slower-paced days than the quicker ones she experienced when working as a principal.
“I think that while the pace is slower, and it requires greater efforts to facilitate change, it is exciting to think about the positive changes I will be able to help facilitate now that I am in a position of power,” Rufener said.
Having never worked as in-depth with high school students as she is now, Rufener has been able to observe many different things as well.
“One of the coolest surprises has been seeing the high school students learn and become adults. It’s super cool to watch as these kids approach the end of their high school career and prepare for their future,” Rufener said.
However, this can’t stop feelings of longing from occurring.
“Of course, I miss the elementary. But with this job, I know that if I ever need a laugh or a smile, I can always see the students throughout the day,” Rufener said.
As superintendent, Rufener has recognized a personal struggle that comes with her job.
“Because I do know all of the staff and families, sometimes I have to remind myself that I need to step away from certain situations and let the building principals handle them,” Rufener said. “I’m quick to jump into situations, and it’s in my nature to help people, so sometimes Mr. Lombardo has reminded me that some things are not my role anymore and it’s not my job to do certain things.”
Under her leadership, Rufener has a few visions for the district in the near future
“One common response on the survey [sent to the staff] was the importance of unifying the staff. While elementary is elementary, junior high is junior high, and high school is high school, I want to bring all of the staff together because ultimately, every teacher’s role is just as important as the next,” Rufener said. “I hope to see them appreciate and understand each other’s roles.”
Rufener also has plans regarding the community too.
“Moving forward, I am looking forward to working together with the staff and the administrative team to bring positive changes to the district, as well as creating more opportunities for community involvement,” Rufener said.
