This year’s homecoming dance was a shining success, promising all attending students countless of memories.
Typically, on the Friday before the dance, students enrolled in the student council at Durand High School would organize and decorate the small gym after school. However, this year, student council members were completely excused from class on Friday to help decorate the small gym.
“At Orangeville, the students would always decorate for the homecoming dance the day before. So, Mrs. McDivitt pitched the idea to Mr. Lombardo, and he approved it,” Student Council Advisor Kendra Cox said.
The small gym could be seen covered in festive balloons, hanging ghosts, sparkling fairy lights, and glowing trees.
“I believe the dance was better decorated this year because we had time during the school day to put it all together,” Cox said.
The atmosphere swirling around the small gym was full of excitement, energy, and pure happiness. With booming music, colorful spotlights, and plenty of dance moves, students who attended the dance were left with many fond memories.
“Out of all four years, this was one of my favorite dances I’ve been to,” this year’s homecoming queen, Elyse Balentyne, said. “It wasn’t boring like some of the other ones I’ve gone to.”
Additionally, the DJ who played at prom last year was rehired for this homecoming as well. All throughout the night, students could be seen dancing with both friends and their dates to the upbeat music. Songs such as “Cupid Shuffle”, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, and “Cotton Eye Joe” were a big hit among the student body. You could see almost every student line up and dance together to songs such as these.
This year, the Eastland Varsity Volleyball Tournament was scheduled on the same day as the homecoming dance, but this did not stop the Lady Bulldogs. As soon as the championship game was played and the team took home second place, many of the ladies got ready in the locker room together.
“Honestly, one of my favorite parts of homecoming was everyone getting ready together in the locker room once the tournament was over,” Balentyne said.
